Heritage & HISTORY

Principal worker Nathan Ransley, has an extensive history linking his family to all things wood for many generations. His great grandfather was a craftsman working in the 1890’s. Operating a sawmill, cabinet making business and undertaking business including making the coffins.

Heather Brae has been in continual ownership of the Ransley family since 1908 to the present day with visual and practical reminders of it’s history, including a 'working' forest that has been and still is selectively harvested and outbuildings that were used to make coffins. The family home is now resided in by Nathan & Shannon Ransley, owners of Turning Point Wood Works and their young family.

In more recent times the property boasted another sawmill built and operated by Nathan’s father. This business assisted Nathan’s current pathway as he wielded pieces of timber from a very young age creating stud framed cubby houses, elaborate billy carts and early joinery and craft.

Upon leaving school Nathan was employed in the family sawmill business and with over 20 years of milling special species, gained experience and a deep passion for tasmanian timbers generally unavailable to the majority of the community.

As the major project for year 10 metalwork class, Nathan decided to design and build a wood lathe and realising this was a large undertaking convinced the teachers to let him start this task in late year nine which was very uncommon practice at the time.

This lathe represented the start of his woodworking career and is still used daily and has been responsible in part or all for the production of over 100,000 items.

The concurrent woodwork project was for the design and construction of an outdoor seat with timber from the family sawmill and is still in use today.

“ Our first woodwork sold commercially in 1992 and some of our longest established customers have been with us from that point till today”

During these years of wood turning Nathan strived for more and wanted to create woodwork that could in time become family heirlooms and the decision was made to build a second workshop dedicated to joinery and wood turning.

This step coupled with previously outlined business direction enabled Nathan to produce items within the one business from management of trees through the harvesting, saw milling, drying and ultimately making craft, furniture, building and renovation work

Whilst still learning about timber on a daily basis, we strive for perfection and although never reaching this we catch enough glimpses of it to motivate and drive the business forward head first
